What a beautifully written memory, although it made me sad for you. I'm glad your parents are wonderful grandparents to you kids.

I heard a funny definition of "grandparents" once: "The people who think their grandchildren are perfect, even though you aren't raising them right!"

Beautiful writing! I can just see your grandfather sitting there tapping ashes into his cuff. It's interesting that your dad's father passed away in January '66, the same month my dad's father passed away. I was just a baby, though, so I don't remember him at all. I do know that the one time he saw me (we lived far away), he leaned over my bed and just said, "Hey, Baby!" As far as I know, he didn't pick me up or play with me. He was a very quiet man, so I suppose he didn't interact much with babies!

I also lost my paternal grandfather when I was in the fourth or fifth grade. He died of Black Lung, plus some other cancer that had invaded his face, making a closed-casket funeral desirable. It was the first funeral I ever attended, and I remember looking around for his body, confused by what appeared to be the trunk of a sedan, loaded up with flowers, sitting on one side of the room, until someone explained to me that that's where Granddad was.

I'm really curious about the salmon suit. Was it one he owned (and wouldn't you love to hear stories about when and where he wore it?) or one they picked out at the funeral home.

Like you, I have a lot of questions I regret not asking while my parents were still around.
